Be sun wise.

This month has been a bit of a challenge for my family. My cousin, Shannon who I am very close to, found out she had skin cancer. Those of you who went to our wedding know her as one of my bridesmaids. She means a great deal to me. She is more like a sister then a cousin. We found out today that she was in the free and clear after 2 nasty surgeries. She will need to be tested every 3 months from here on out. This can happen to anyone. Shannon is the most fit and healthy person I know. She even owns her own palates and yoga studio.  From her experience she gives the following advice she learned to avoid what she had to go through. I thought it was important to share with everyone.

- be sun smart – short intense exposure seem to have the highest risk. Cover up when possible, but most importantly try not to burn.
- get your skin checked every year – especially for those related to me. Having a family member diagnosed, especially in their 30’s increase your genetic risk
- get copies of all of your medical records – save it how ever you chose, but have them accessible and portable so you can take things with you wherever you go

I am so sorry to hear about Shannon! She is one of the healthiest people I know. I will think good thoughts for her :) The poor thing.
